I have tried to get pen pals through International Pen Friends, an organization which aims to promote the traditional art of writing letters. Now I seldom find new pen pals as I am having good friendship with my online friends. However, I do highly recommend people who have no experience in writing or receiving an international snail mail letter to try International Pen Friends.
I always anticipate receiving letters from my pen pals. The most touching moment of a pen pal relationship is giving and receiving gifts from each other. I have a pen pal who is a Norwegian. The Native American history really fascinated him but unfortunately he could not get a book called the Ishi, In Two words. This is a story about a Yahi man who was the only survivor from the massacre in his tribe.
If I had a pen pal from some exotic Islands such as Pitcairn Island, I would be exhilarated. I spend most of my time looking up the history and culture of Pitcairn Island and it really interests me. The most recent inhabitants over there are descendants of HMAV Bounty. I reckon there will be people who will share the same thoughts with me.
In the old days, people would prefer writing letters to each other and the world has undergone changes. People switch their communication mode to emails. Three years ago, there was a Yahoo! group about Pitcairn culture and history and I joined it with excitement. This was an opportunity for me to share my interest with people from other parts of the world.
Sometimes we can meet some people living on Pitcairn Island on the Yahoo! Discussion board, but not too often as they are busy with their housework and handicrafts making. I got a few ‘online pen pals’ from the board and we discuss about the Island on the board and via email. Yahoo! groups do help if you want to meet people from different countries .
Although I did not frequently write to my pen pals, sometimes I will choose to email them. But of course emails cannot replace the power of letters writing as letters can show our passion and make our friendship more remarkable.
The website-Interpals also provides a good platform for us to meet new online pen pals. I knew my Japanese pen pal through this website and it is trustworthy. You can meet people around the globe.
Other choices are Facebook and MySpace. People are now more careful in accepting friends on Facebook and MySpace, but this does not do good as they lose chances to meet good friends from other countries. We could add these new friends to widen our social circle, just to check the profiles of the new requests carefully, then you can meet new friends without fear.
